Silver Tsunami Warning – Trauma Doctor’s Dire Outlook

We were shocked and disappointed to read this ABC News article describing the future of the aging population as a Silver Tsunami hitting hospital trauma departments.

Falls are the leading cause of both hospitalisations and deaths from injury in Australia, accounting for more than 40 per cent of both. People over 65 are the most likely to end up in hospital after a fall, and the risk increases with age.

These stats are shocking, especially when a significant percentage of these falls are preventable, but it was also very disappointing that the solution was not mentioned in the piece. It’s written from a trauma doctor’s point of view about how to manage the triage process. That’s really important stuff but there was the perfect opportunity to highlight ways to minimise accident and emergency admissions in the first place.

How we can hold back the Tsunami
Are your Consumers concerned about the risk of falls as they age? They are not alone. As we journey through life, various factors such as polypharmacy, foot problems (e.g. nail deformities or calluses), cognitive impairment, loss of physical conditioning and even a fear of falling can contribute to an increased risk of falls. Fear not, because the evidence-based Sunbeam Program is here to provide support, strength, and confidence.

Who Would Benefit from the Sunbeam Program?
Anyone experiencing one or more of the following factors could benefit greatly from our Program:

  • Slowed reaction times
  • Decreased muscle mass and strength (sarcopenia)
  • Lower limb disability or difficulty with mobility
  • Chronic health conditions like COPD, cardiovascular diseases, or neurological issues
  • Sedentary lifestyle or social isolation
  • History of previous falls

How Does the Sunbeam Program Work?
Our program starts with an initial assessment conducted by our experienced practitioners at Bodyright Healthcare. This assessment not only establishes a baseline for comparison but also allows us to tailor the program to your specific needs.
Over the course of 13 weeks, participants engage in exercise sessions twice a week, designed to enhance strength, balance, and overall physical conditioning. These sessions are spaced on non-consecutive days to ensure optimal recovery and progress.
At the end of the program, another assessment is conducted to measure progress and provide personalised recommendations. Depending on individual needs, some participants may be advised to continue with another round of the Sunbeam Program to maximise benefits.
We provide all necessary equipment and ensure participants are trained to use it safely and effectively. Our exercise routines are backed by scientific research of Jennifer Hewitt et al. in their 2018 study, “Sunbeam Program Reduces Rate of Falls in Long-Term Care Residents With Mild to Moderate Cognitive Impairment or Dementia.”

Take the First Step Toward Greater Confidence
Don’t let the fear of falling hold your consumers back from living life to the fullest. Join the Sunbeam Program and take proactive steps towards enhancing their strength, balance, and overall well-being. Contact us today to learn more about how our program can benefit.
